Garden of Salvation

The immediate concerns of the Destiny 2 storyline are obvious. We have a beehive witch trapped in the city of dreams that we would very much love to die, but we know that is not happening, and instead she will grab the light, give it to her hive, and we will lead the fight. against that brood in his throne world six months from now in Destiny 2’s new expansion, The Witch Queen.
Destiny 2 has built Savathun as an antagonist for years. Pretty much the entire lifespan of the game, and at the very least, since D2 launched with strikes like “Savathun’s Song,” indicating the Hive was calling it to us. Last year was all about Savathun, just like the upcoming expansion.
And yet, no, Savathun is not the big bad in the entire Destiny franchise. I’m not even sure she’ll remain a villain after the expansion, given that we both seem to have a common enemy.
Something… else is there. Something we’ve seen mutter, but for the first time, Destiny 2 is starting to talk about it openly. This week, Mara gave her the closest thing to a name, The Voice in the Darkness, which she saw as a force older and more powerful than the evil things she commands, namely the Dark Fleet ( the Pyramids) and the Ver de la Ruche. Gods.
She’s scary, but it’s not her

Before that, we heard that it was also the same thing that tasked Xivu Arath with hunting down Savathun. Savathun herself said it was an entity between light and dark watching us from the start. We know that at this moment he controls the Taken, Scorn and large chunks of the Hive. Prior to that, with the Dark Fleet dropping the Vex on us, it also had some influence over them. This season, we’ve basically learned that Oryx and the worm god he killed, Akka, weren’t the originator of the Taken, but this thing was.
I don’t want to continue using the Avengers metaphors here, but Bungie himself uses this comparison frequently, and in essence, this being appears to be our Thanos, a singular villain (not like a giant paracausal form, I don’t think so. ) that we have to regroup with old allies (Legendary Guardians, Mara Sov) new allies (Caiatl, Mithrax) and maybe even enemies (Savathun) to face him once and for all and get to where Bungie says the series goes, the to finish from the Light and Dark saga.
It’s a long-term project, and I don’t think it will fully kick off until The Witch Queen. I believe the next two years, the run up to Lightfall, then a year until The Final Shape, will finally reveal The Voice in the Darkness, and we can give it some kind of form other than us, vaguely guessing (the statues of the Pyramids? Is he hiding under these stone slabs?).
But beware, it is being built right before our eyes, albeit quietly, by bits of dialogue here and there. Yes, Savathun and Xivu Arath are the immediate threats, and yet Bungie is planting seeds here that will lead to the end of this whole saga in two and a half more years.
