Facebook and Ray-Ban have teamed up to create a pair of smart glasses that could launch very soon. A microsite on the Ray-Ban website shows a silhouette of the upcoming laptop, and other than one key detail, it doesn’t disclose any information on what to expect from the pair. Earlier this week, Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Facebook Reality Labs, apparently teased smart glasses with a point of view video recording. The next smart glasses are expected to come with a few augmented reality (AR) features, likely similar to those found on Snapchat’s Snap Shows.
The microsite on the official Ray-Ban website, as mentioned, shows a silhouette of a pair of glasses with the Ray-Ban and Facebook logos. The teaser also mentions a date: September 9, 2021. Additionally, the microsite offers users the option to sign up for a “release notification”. It is not explicitly mentioned if the smart glasses will debut on Thursday, September 9.
Earlier this week, Bosworth shared a video on Twitter, which seems to be teasing the next cell phone. He shared a perspective video recording of himself and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The video, however, does not mention anything about the expected Facebook x Ray-Ban smart glasses, nor does it show them.
Last year, Facebook announced that it would launch its smart glasses - along with Ray-Ban - in 2021. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg also confirmed that Facebook’s next hardware launch will be smart glasses. Facebook is also working on real AR glasses, but said it would take at least 5 years for these to be released.
The next smart glasses are expected to be shaped like one of Ray-Ban’s iconic frames, with a few more AR features. The specifications of the smart glasses are not yet known.
Smart glasses may be similar to previous generations of Snapchat’s Snap Spectacles. These glasses have now evolved into AR-equipped smart glasses designed for artists and developers.
