Reschio, an opulent sanctuary nestled among the rolling hills and ancient oak forests of Umbria, has garnered admiration as one of the most stellar hotels to open this summer. The epic project, led by London-trained architect Count Benedikt Bolza and his artist wife, was born out of a decades-long collaboration with private owners to turn more than half of the plot’s 50 crumbling farmhouses into sumptuous private homes. Shortly after, the duo also phoenix the estate’s 11th century central Castello in the 36-key hotel, restaurant and spa that opened in May 2021. As well as revealing an estate’s decadent makeover historic, the property’s debut also featured the world BB for Reschio, the founders’ design studio and subsequent line of bespoke interior design.

Since its inception, the BB for Reschio collection has grown organically with every restored house in the Reschio estate. As his homes were remodeled and filled with handpicked decorations and heirlooms, Count Bolza simultaneously brought in local artisans - carpenters, stonemasons, tile makers, blacksmiths and lighting masters - to fill in the gaps by creating custom furniture, lighting with new and reclaimed regional materials such as old oak, travertine and marble. The magic happens inside Reschio’s creative hub, Tabaccaia, a former 1940s tobacco factory that has been painstakingly restored to its industrial origins and accented with rustic bricks and concrete accents.

Bolza imagines his furniture as the old ones did: by designing the proportions of the space that each one will occupy. “BB for Reschio has carried on this natural tradition with every project he undertakes. Collect ancient materials to craft new furniture. Use architectural design to efficiently arrange space and furnishings, ”explains Bolza. “Custom furniture has never been a luxury; it was just the natural order of things. Some items from the BB for Reschio collection are available for purchase at auctions, private sales and, for the first time this year, at Milan Design Week.

BB for Reschio has added two bespoke pieces of furniture handcrafted by local Italian artisans to its exclusive collection, just in time for Salone 2021 (the show runs until September 10). Architect Count Benedikt Bolza designed the pair of items, the king-size bed and the oval side table, to complement the interiors of his stunningly recent new farmhouse on Reschio’s estate, Cercoschene.

The dashing four-bedroom house, according to the earl, did not have a stately bed in the master suite. So he made one. Anchored by a striking Baroque headboard, the grisaille oak canopy bed features intricate uprights with East Asian-inspired finials in plated brass. Airy natural linens have been fitted to the surrounding stems with rings that complement the colored oak, which have been finished with several coats of gray wax to achieve the perfect shade and color dimension.

“The King’s Bed comes from the same stable as my humblest bone bed, but it certainly has an air of grandeur, it almost needed the oval side table in his pajama stripes to bring it back to earth,” continues Bolza.
The Oval Side Table has a refined silhouette and has been designed in several distinct iterations, or ‘personalities’ depending on the veneer, which includes natural wood, stained green, stained black, and zebra stripes. The table is geometrically pure in design, with a curved oak frame that houses a central drawer with a hanging handle. It rests on a four-legged base with crossing crossbars. The zebra stripe can be spotted as a nightstand in the Cercoschene master suite, adding an element of whimsy to the stately bedrooms. while the elegant version in natural wood has been added to the guest room.
“During this process, we discovered that these special rooms often became family heirlooms, finding their way to old and new homes far beyond the Reschio estate,” explains the count, “making their way to perspective of each new piece we add our line even more exciting.
