The Manchester United striker has sharply criticized Mr Williamson’s handling of free school meals during the pandemic.
The Cabinet Minister said: “We met on Zoom and he seemed incredibly engaged, compassionate and charming, but then he had to shoot. I didn’t want to be the one holding him back from his training ”,
His team then clarified that he actually spoke with Camden-born Itoje about laptops for students and equal access to education during Covid.
Retweeting the story, Rashford said: “The accent could have been a gift,” followed by a laughing emoji.
While the 23-year-old joked about the mistake, others called the mistake “appalling” and “embarrassing”.
Liberal Democrat MP Daisy Cooper said: “It’s a shocking and embarrassing admission that Gavin Williamson just falls short.
“The Education Secretary has let children, parents and teachers down by failing to get enough money to make up for learning lost during the pandemic.
“Now he has confused two black sports heroes and failed to recognize Marcus Rashford, who has led the charge in the fight against child poverty.
“If rumors of an impending reshuffle are true, this must surely be the last nail in the coffin for Gavin Williamson to take up a ministerial post again.”
Tottenham MP David Lammy said: “It is appalling. Gavin Williamson. What made you mistake Maro Itoje for Marcus Rashford?
“You must be the most ignorant, ignorant and incompetent Education Secretary in UK history.”
The government announced in June 2020 that around 1.3 million schoolchildren will receive vouchers for free meals during the holidays under the new “Covid Summer Food Fund”.
This followed a passionate campaign by Rashford in which he drew on his own experience of relying on free school meals and food banks while growing up.
The prime minister’s spokesperson said at the time: “This is a specific measure to reflect the unique circumstances.
“Those who are eligible will be those who are already entitled to school meals. ”
