10-month-old baby girl shot after argument in Philadelphia’s Kensington ward

PHILADELPHIA (UKTN) – A 10-month-old girl is in hospital at St. Christopher’s Hospital in Kensington on Sunday evening after being shot in the hand. According to police, an argument broke out this morning after a family was celebrating a wedding.

The mother tells CBS3 that she was holding her baby when those shots were fired and had she not run and dived for cover, she fears this could have been a different story.

The gunman has not yet been arrested, but the baby’s mother tells Eyewitness News that it was her new stepfather who started shooting early Sunday morning.

“It happened so fast, I didn’t think he would do it, you know,” said Keylianis Issac, the mother.

Isaac still had her baby’s blood on her shirt as she spoke exclusively to CBS3 after taking her 10-month-old, Jaelianis, to St Christopher’s Hospital.

The baby’s hand was chafed by a bullet outside their home on the corner of Ontario and Emerald Streets in Kensington Sunday morning.

“She just cried, she just cried and I happened to look and I saw all that blood on my shirt,” Issac said. “It’s very bad.”

Outside the house, you saw an empty bottle of alcohol on the sidewalk and other bottles on the bar under a tent in the backyard.

Issac said her mother was getting married on Saturday and the reception was at home.

But around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Issac said she got into an argument with her new stepfather after he started behaving inappropriately. So she told her mother, the new bride, what had happened.

“She went up to him and confronted him about it and then he just went crazy,” Issac said.

“During that verbal argument, things escalated and one of the individuals grabbed a gun and started shooting at several individuals here,” said Philadelphia Police Department Lieutenant Robert Brockenbrough.

Surveillance video obtained by CBS3 shows Issac outside with the baby in her arms. Then she starts running and hides behind a car.

According to the police, four shots were fired and Jaelianis was beaten in the hand. The shooter then took to the street.

“I just want justice for my little girl,” Isaac said. “Like I need them to find him because I feel like if they don’t, something else will happen.”

Police confirm that the shooter is known to the family.

CBS3 has been told the baby is stable and her mother said she will need stitches and a metal plate in her hand.

She is expected to stay in the hospital overnight.
