A gunman was injured during an exchange with an FBI agent outside CIA headquarters in Virginia.

A gunman was injured in a shooting involving an FBI agent at CIA headquarters near Washington early Monday evening, the FBI said in a statement.

According to the FBI, the man got out of his vehicle, was “hired by law enforcement officers” and was injured around 6 pm. by NBC News, the man was taken to hospital. The hospital has not been named.

“The FBI takes seriously all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members,” Samantha Shero, public affairs officer for the FBI’s Washington field office, said in an email. “The review process is thorough and objective, and is conducted as expeditiously as possible under the circumstances.”

A CIA spokesperson said the agency’s headquarters remained secure and referred questions to the FBI, which released limited details. It was not immediately clear whether any officers or officers had been injured.

The secure campus, in Langley, Virginia, has served the agency since 1961. Closed to the general public, the complex is accessible only to those with security clearances or by special arrangement. He was executed by lethal injection in 2002 after having evaded prosecution for years in Pakistan. Virginia has since abolished the death penalty.
