Only one of the two men aboard a dinghy that sank in Wellington Harbor today was wearing a life jacket, leaving one hanging from a pool noodle to stay afloat.
When the boat got off around noon, the man in a life jacket struggled to swim 240 meters to shore near Scorching Bay.
The Marine Police Unit was then deployed to rescue his friend kept afloat near the pool noodles in meter-high swells, and he was picked up soon after.
He was treated for mild hypothermia.
Senior Constable Roscoe Lane said the men were lucky, and it is a timely reminder for boaters to prepare before entering the water.
