Beaufort deputies detain 2 SC teens after police chase, car crash

Two teens were detained after Beaufort County deputies said they crashed a car after a police chase and then drove off Friday.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said the 17-year-old youths were detained hours later Friday and taken to Columbia’s South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice, where both will face charges.

The police chase began around 3 p.m. Friday, after a car fled a traffic stop on St. Helena Island and then crashed, and three in the car ran away, police said. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy attempted to pull over the Jeep Cherokee on Sea Island Parkway, citing “suspicious activity” from within the vehicle, according to Major Angela Viens, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

When the driver failed to stop, the sheriff’s office said a chase ensued and the jeep crashed at an intersection.

Three people ran from the crash and police were able to arrest one person, Viens said in an initial Island Packet report Friday.

Hours later, the sheriff’s office said they were able to apprehend another teen who ran away. Friday’s search ended at 5:30 p.m
