The story of Overwatch’s decline can be told as a series of dates.

november 2014 – Overwatch is unveiled as Blizzard’s first new IP in nearly two decades, joining StarCraft, Warcraft and Diablo, much to fans’ excitement.

May 2016 – Overwatch was officially released with great success, ushering in a resurgence of objective-based “hero” players first popularized by Team Fortress. Blizzard has a new instant IP address.

april 2020 – Overwatch releases Echo, its first new hero in over a year, and its last new hero since.

April 2021 – Jeff Kaplan, Game Director Overwatch, is leaving Blizzard completely.

July 2021 – Activision Blizzard is involved in a series of lawsuits alleging mistreatment and harassment of women in the company, many of which are specifically linked to Blizzard and members of the team still working on Overwatch.

August 2021 – Blizzard announces it will rename Jesse McCree, an Overwatch character who shares the exact name of someone accused of misconduct who is no longer with the company.

January 2022 – LEGO announces that it is delaying its Overwatch 2 toy line due to the nature of the allegations that Activision Blizzard is facing.

Activision Blizzard’s internal issues, combined with an absurd desire to force an Overwatch sequel, causing development on the base game to halt, resulted in a shocking drop in grace and relevance to Overwatch, where the live games that continued development, Valorant, Apex Legends, Fortnite, now hold much more influence in the industry, while Overwatch players await updates for a poorly designed sequel that is helping to actively harm to the series she is trying to expand. This is one of the weirdest stories in video games, which is still ongoing and only gets worse with each passing year.
