SWAT team reaches suspicious white van involved in LA mass shooting standoff

A body was found in a van involved in a standoff and possibly related to a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California.

A SWAT team in Torrance breached the white van after a standoff occurred at the intersection between Hawthorne and Sepulveda for more than two hours.

The incident, and the suspect within, is believed to be related to both the mass shooting in Monterey Park that killed ten and injured ten others, and a separate situation in the neighboring city of Alhambra in which the gunman was disarmed by bystanders and then fled in a white van.

UKTN previously reported that the man involved in the standoff may have shot himself. At around 1 p.m. PST, officers finally locked the van and entered the vehicle only to find a body in the driver’s seat, according to UKTN.

A photo of the suspect in the shooting on Saturday evening has now been released. The shooter was described as an Asian man, between 30 and 50 years old.

ICYMI: That is why the police do not release names of hospitals where victims are treated

At a news conference on Sunday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said he will not release the names of the hospitals where the victims were taken as a precaution.

Mr Lunas said it was reported earlier on Sunday that a specific hospital was treating some of the injured victims when a gunman opened fire at a dance studio in Monterey Park.

“That is downright awful. Please, these victims and survivors have so much to deal with, let’s not traumatize them even more.”

Police are withholding the suspect’s name

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the various law enforcement departments investigating the Monterey Park shooting will not release the name of a suspect whose photo has been released.

Mr Luna said releasing a name could potentially jeopardize the investigation and a possible arrest.

Police surround a white van in Torrance

Police in Torrance, California, which is outside of Los Angeles, have identified a white van and surrounded it with police vehicles, including SWAT vans and BearCat armored vehicles.

The armored cars were directly behind and in front of the van to prevent the suspect from driving away.

Initial reports from an UKTN 7 broadcast suggest that police used a drone to get a closer look at the interior of the van.

Mr Luna said it was “too early” to determine whether or not the shooting was racially motivated, but said “everything is on the table”.

“But who walks into a dance hall and shoots 20 people?” he asked at a press conference.

Standoff possibly linked to Monterey shooting near LA

Reports have surfaced of a standoff near Los Angeles, according to UKTN.

The situation takes place at the intersection of Hawthorne and Sepulveda in the town of Torrance.

Torrance police on the scene with a SWAT team stormed a white van that may be linked to a suspect in the vehicle.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna had previously confirmed that witnesses to a separate incident in Alhambra — which police said could be related to the Monterey Park mass shooting — saw a suspect flee the scene in a white van.

The second Alhambra incident occurred about 20 to 30 minutes after the Monterey Park shooting.

“We are aware of an incident that occurred in Alhambra and we have investigators on the scene trying to determine if there is any connection,” Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Captain Andrew Meyer said at a Sunday news conference.

Mr Luna said the suspect entered the studio with a gun but was disarmed by customers in the business.

“A male Asian suspect walked into a dance hall with a firearm and some individuals wrestled the firearm away from him and that person ran off,” Luna said at a press conference on Sunday. “Some witnesses in that area describe a white van, but we don’t know at this time if it is connected.”

There were no injuries in Alhambra.

Ten people were killed and ten others injured in Monterey Park.
