BTS condemns anti-Asian violence, shares experiences of racism they have faced

South Korean boyband BTS released a statement on Tuesday condemning the recent surge in anti-Asian violence and shared their experiences of the racism they faced.

“We send our deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. We feel sorrow and anger,” the group said in the statement.

The statement highlighted times when they “were discriminated against as Asians” including “swearing for no reason and making fun of our appearance” and asked “why Asians speak English. “.

They said that “the group’s own experiences are irrelevant” to recent events but that the racism was “enough to make us feel powerless and undermine our self-esteem.”

“What is happening now cannot be separated from our identity as Asians. It has taken a long time for us to discuss it carefully and we have thought deeply about how we should express our message,” they added. .
