A 54-year-old woman has died in Canada after receiving the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine, the first drug-related death in the country, provincial authorities said on Tuesday.
“I am sad to know that a healthy 54-year-old woman … has died because she was vaccinated. It is difficult to take,” said François Legault, the premier of Quebec, at the meeting. ‘a press conference.
The director of public health for the French-speaking province, Horacio Arruda, said life-saving treatments were not working and the unidentified patient had died of cerebral thrombosis after being vaccinated.
But he warned that the death should not change government recommendations to use the vaccine for people over 45.
“We had serious complications, there was one in 100,000 (doses administered). But we must not forget that to date, more than 400,000 people have been vaccinated with AstraZeneca ”, added the Minister of Health of Quebec, Christian Dube.
As of Friday, just over 1.1 million doses of AstraZeneca had been administered nationwide.
Only four other cases of blood clots associated with low platelet counts have been reported in the country, and each patient has recovered.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau received a photo from AstraZeneca on Friday.
On Tuesday, the Canadian leader said about 60 soldiers had been deployed to overwhelmed hospitals in Nova Scotia to help treat critical patients.
The day before, around 30 army nurses and medical technicians were sent to reinforce hospital staff in Ontario, which is grappling with a new wave of infections caused by variants.
In Quebec, which has suffered the most Covid deaths of any region in the country, the latest data has shown infection rates are slowing, allowing the government to announce it is pushing the start of a curfew night in Montreal from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (0130 GMT) from next Monday.
