Authorities are deeply concerned about the well-being of 80-year-old Swiss sailor Peter Baggenstos, who was last seen in Hobart nearly two months ago.
The Swiss left for New Zealand on December 1 on his 13 meter yacht “Lady Lay”.
The yacht’s transponder ceased transmission on December 5, about 90 miles (140 km) off the eastern coast of Tasmania, which was believed to have bad weather at the time.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority conducted a large-scale search of the Tasman Sea, but neither Mr Baggenstos nor the yacht were found.
He was in good health and was considered a strong sailor.
The ship was equipped with safety equipment, including a life raft, a distress beacon and a GPS device.
The investigation involved AMSA, Interstate, international law enforcement agencies and Interpol.
Tasmanian police have now taken over the investigation and are deeply concerned for his well-being.
The New Zealand authorities have no record of Mr Baggenstos’s arrival.
