Chelsea have made a transfer request over the availability of Palmeiras center-back Gustavo Gomez, according to a report.
The Blues are heading for the summer transfer window looking to build on a fantastic half-season under Thomas Tuchel. After winning the Champions League, the focus next season will be on the Premier League. But to close the gap on Manchester City, the London club must make dedications.
A new attacker is a priority; while Timo Werner regained his marks towards the end of the season, Chelsea have only scored more than two goals in a game under Tuchel once.
The Blues have also had links with a new center-back; German Antonio Rudiger is only one year old on his deal and will discuss his plans after Euro 2020.
German Niklas Sule has therefore surfaced as a potential addition. According to the Nacion, however, Paraguayan captain Gomez has become a new target.
The report claims his Brazilian employers have learned of an approach from Stamford Bridge.
Palmeiras then asked Chelsea to rack up the “millions” it would take to sign him. While his Transfer market the value stands at 6 million euros (5.1 million pounds sterling), its true valuation remains uncertain.
In addition, figures from the Gomez camp have clung to interest and are keeping an eye out.
So far, however, Chelsea have not made any firm moves on the transfer.
Gomez has made 41 appearances for Paraguay, captaining his country 13 times. Indeed, he has taken the armband in five of the last seven World Cup qualifiers.
The 28-year-old first moved to Palmeiras in 2018 on a two-year loan from AC Milan.
He signed permanently for Brazil last summer and went on to accumulate 116 appearances, totaling 14 goals and one assist. He has also played every game as Palmeiras won the Libertadores title last season.
Chelsea have already done a bit of sorting out their defense for next season by tying compatriot Gomez’s South American Thiago Silva for a new one-year contract.
