Germany must implement tougher nationwide measures, including possible curfews, to break the third wave of coronavirus infections, Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Friday.
“We need a lockdown,” Spahn (CDU) told a press conference in Berlin, adding that nighttime curfews may be needed.
He said there are currently nearly 4,500 intensive care patients in Germany, adding: “If this continues, it will be too much for our healthcare system.”
Spahn also said the fewest infections recorded at Easter was not a reliable indicator. Health officials have suggested that fewer people are going to the doctor during the holiday period, giving the false impression that the number of cases in Germany is declining.
This is breaking news and will be updated as more details become available.
