While I most likely won’t be adopting wild fashion trends at my age, I do like to pass on what’s going on.
One big trend, which I want to completely miss, is Crocs.
I understand the ironic appeal of the ugly but comfortable shoe, really, and I have my own versions (the Marni Fussbett sandal), but I don’t care if the Croc is a designer or garden version, they were ugly when they were invented and they remain that way no matter how much you dazzle them and add a few thousand to the price.
I saw a young woman in town who looked amazing, in a black pantsuit, a khaki trench coat, a fabulous bag and her hair up in a ponytail and bright pink Crocs. I know the idea is they’re a cool wardrobe update, but they look like giant clown shoes, so I hope she wasn’t on her way to a job interview.
The amphibious rubber Croc was originally developed as a boat shoe and unveiled in Florida in 2002, which, if the guest photos at Donald Trump’s Mar A Lago hotel are anything to go by, isn’t exactly a style capital.
But in a real-life example of “there’s no arguing about taste”: Crocs has since sold more than 720 million pairs of shoes and is now one of the top 10 non-athletic shoe brands in the world, with sales expected to increase to over $5 billion in 2026. So don’t mind me.
Another key trend we’re seeing is ‘The Art of the Table’ as fashion houses such as Dolce and Gabbana, Ralph Lauren and Hermes continue to expand their glorious tableware and home offerings.
The recently renovated Dior flagship store at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris has a breathtaking range of crockery, glassware and diapers, with dazzling price tags.
The recent Salone de Mobile design fair in Milan focused heavily on the art of the table with beautiful examples at fashion houses such as La Double J, showing bright colors and patterns, layer after layer.
It’s a trend that has been adopted by younger style influencers as well, such as setting a beautiful table complete with multicolored and patterned charger plates (for those unfamiliar, a charger plate is larger than a dinner plate but smaller than a serving bowl and used as decorative items. base for plates and bowls), glassware, napkins, placemats, flowers and candlesticks is highly Instagrammable.
Lockdowns were certainly responsible for an increase in people buying more cookware and tableware, so it’s interesting to see table runners becoming as important as handbags for a new generation.
I’ve been eyeing the glow-skin phenomenon for a while, as social media beauty girls sculpt their super-bright complexions (I think we went more for dewy back in my day).
