Dubai: A Dubai hitchhiker was sentenced to six months in prison for stealing Dh500, a mobile phone from a motorist and threatening him, according to the Dubai Magistrates’ Court.
The 51-year-old Iranian driver said he was in the Al Quoz area after midnight last November when he saw the accused standing by the side of the road, looking for a ride. “He waved his hands, asking me to stop. I stopped the car and agreed to drop him off at a nearby location. Suddenly he strangled me with his hands, asking for my money, ”the Iranian driver said, according to records.
The 28-year-old Cameroonian accused stole 500 Dh from the driver of the car and his mobile phone after threatening to call his friends and beat him up.
Dubai police arrested the accused who denied the theft charge despite police finding the victim’s phone with him. “The victim identified the accused in the line of suspects,” said a 40-year-old police officer.
The Dubai prosecutor’s office charged the accused with robbery and threats. The judges ordered the deportation of the defendant after having served his prison sentence and paid an additional fine of 500 Dh.
