Dustin Lance Black said he is expected to make a full recovery from a recent head injury.

The 48-year-old screenwriter said the prognosis looks good for Thursday’s premiere mom’s boy, a documentary adaptation of his 2019 memoir.

“What was really challenging is that I can’t use my mind,” Black said in an interview with Variety. “And I didn’t share it publicly until I was in a place where I could be a little creative again — at least a few hours a day in the morning with breaks.”

The Oscar-winning writer said it’s been a rough time, but things are starting to improve. “It takes a long time to come up with the next thought or word,” Black said. “It’s coming back and the doctors are saying hopefully I’ll be back in Lance before Christmas.”

In September, Black revealed on Instagram that he had suffered a head injury the month before and explained that he was recovering.

“So I disappeared for a while…A month ago I suffered a serious head injury that left me off duty,” Black wrote at the time.

“My doctors showed little improvement and ordered me to shut down my brain in the hopes it would heal. This has been a challenging, terrifying time for a creative type who relies on what’s in his skull to work, to care for and to love. And now I understand the way back will be long,” he said.

Thanks for all your love and patience. There’s more to come. Promise.”

While Black did not reveal the cause of the injury, his post included a photo of himself smiling while wearing a shirt embroidered with the word “Lucky.”
