Employee who worked at Google for 16 years fired at 3am

Goole laid off 12,000 employees yesterday.

New Delhi:

Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc has laid off 12,000 employees from various teams. The staff were informed in a memo about the massive job cuts by the CEO of tech giant Sundar Pichai. Those affected include a software engineering executive named Justin Moore, who worked at Google for over 16.5 years and was fired after his account was deactivated at 3am.

Mr Moore wrote in a LinkedIn post: “So after over 16.5 years at Google, it looks like I was fired at 3am this morning via an automated account deactivation as one of the lucky 12,000. I have no other information, as I did not receive any of the other messages that the standard “you have been released” website (which I also cannot access now) said I should receive.

The employee added that his time at Google has been “great for the most part” and that he was proud of the work he and his teams have done.

“This also makes it clear that work is not your life, and employers – especially big, faceless ones like Google – see you as 100% disposable. Live life, not work,” the post continued.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in his message to employees that he takes “full responsibility” for the job cuts. According to Google, the layoff is global and has immediate implications for U.S. staff. It affects teams across the tech giant, including recruiting and corporate functions and also some tech and product teams.

Google has also announced support for the laid-off employees as they look for new opportunities. They are paid for the full notice period, which is a minimum of 60 days, while severance pay has also been offered “starting at 16 weeks salary plus two weeks for each additional year at Google, accelerating at least 16 weeks of GSU vested”.
