Former Premier League goalkeeper David James believes Dean Henderson should remain Manchester United’s first choice going forward.
David De Gea has proven to be one of United’s best signing since joining Atletico Madrid in 2011. Since joining, he has racked up 441 appearances and 155 clean sheets. However, the quality of his services has been increasingly monitored since the Spaniard’s 2018 World Cup campaign.
Alongside Jordan Pickford, he racked up one of the worst records for errors leading to goals in 2019/20. Meanwhile, he was criticized by a man utd legend for failing to save the crucial penalty kick in the Europa League final last season.
Suddenly, the doubt about the future of De Gea also appeared. Henderson replaced him as number 1 in Premier League matches towards the end of the last term.
He especially made solid demonstrations and a better goalkeeper – as Gary Neville pointed out – is a cornerstone to close the gap with champions Manchester City.
According to ex-Prem James star, Henderson won the right to stand between the sticks for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“I would go to Henderson, he is 23 and at Premier League level he has obviously shown he can play, with Sheffield United and also now on several occasions with Manchester United,” said the expert. Goal.
“There are people who get used to playing for Manchester United, which is slightly different from playing for Sheffield United, but the abilities he already has and the potential he has far exceed what David de Gea offers.
James stressed that while De Gea remains a solid goalkeeper in his own right, he won’t improve as he enters his 30s.
“De Gea is not a bad goalkeeper, that’s not about that,” he said. “I just think from a manager’s point of view, you look at where the club is going to go forward.
“De Gea has been phenomenal for Manchester United, but to keep performing at this level is so difficult.
“I think with Dean Henderson there is an opportunity for Manchester United to move forward.”
Henderson earned his place in the England squad for Euro 2020 alongside Pickford and Sam Johnstone.
De Gea, meanwhile, is part of the Spanish squad alongside Unai Simon and Robert Sanchez.
De Gea has the transfer conviction
Despite speculation that De Gea could leave United, a report claims that the cap has its own ideas.
Indeed, he would have believes his future still lies at Old Trafford beyond the summer.
He would also be convinced that he will be installed as the first choice again.
