Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp back up after brief outage for thousands

Facebook’s platforms, including WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, were down for thousands of users on Thursday, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.

User reports revealed more than 112,000 issues on Facebook’s website, while 101,000 Instagram users and 516 WhatsApp users reported issues on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET (3:30 a.m. IST, Friday).

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Downdetector tracks outages by gathering status reports from a variety of sources, including errors submitted by users on its platform. Outages can affect a larger number of users.

This is the second major outage affecting the Menlo Park-based business in a month, with another outage in mid-March causing problems for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users for almost an hour around the world.

Other recent major outages include the Microsoft 365 service disruption at the start of the month and another in mid-March.

With a significant number of people working from home across the world thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, such outages are having major effects on productivity and challenging the new paradigm. Zoom, the video conferencing service that has gained millions of users due to the remote working culture brought on by the pandemic, also faced an outage lasting several hours last month.
