Former Barcelona footballer Dani Alves arrested in Spain on suspicion of sexual assault. Earlier, a Spanish court had opened an investigation into allegations that former Brazilian defender Dani Alves sexually assaulted a woman at a nightclub in Barcelona last month. A court in Barcelona has opened an investigation “into an alleged crime of sexual assault resulting from a complaint filed by a woman against a footballer,” Catalonia’s Supreme Court said in a statement.
While the statement did not name Alves, informed sources confirmed to UKTN that the former Barcelona and Juventus player was the subject of the investigation.
Catalan police said they had received a complaint on Jan. 2 from a woman who said Alves touched her inappropriately.
The alleged assault took place at a popular Barcelona nightclub on the night of December 30-31, according to Spanish media reports.
The player was accused of putting his hands in the woman’s pants, the reports said.
Alves, 39, confirmed he was at the nightclub at the time, but denied any allegation. He told Spanish private television Antena 3 last week that he had “never seen the woman before”.
“I was there, in that place, with more people having fun. Everyone knows I like to dance. Having a good time, but without encroaching on other people’s space,” he added.
Alves, who now plays for the Mexican Pumas UNAM, was on holiday in Barcelona after his participation in the World Cup with Brazil in Qatar.
He was the oldest player to represent Brazil at the Men’s World Cup.
