Formula One adds Las Vegas as 2023 calendar grows to 24 races | Formula 1 News

Formula 1 has provisionally added a first race in Las Vegas to the schedule announced Tuesday for 2023, bringing the total to 24. The season starts on March 5 in Bahrain and ends in Abu Dhabi, more than nine months later on November 26. Las Vegas will be the penultimate round as F1 is quickly adding a third race in the United States after Miami comes on schedule this season. The race in Las Vegas is subject to “homologation” or official circuit approval by the FIA, the governing body for motorsport.

The Chinese Grand Prix, last raced in 2019, returns, as does the Qatar Grand Prix in Losail, which debuted in 2021 but will not be held this year.

The French Grand Prix, which was first raced in 1906 and is therefore the oldest Grand Prix, will be cancelled. It was previously dropped between 2009 and 2017 before returning to Le Castellet.

The Sochi Grand Prix, scratched this year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, will not return.

Two races considered endangered – Belgium and Monaco – will be kept.

“Formula 1 has an unprecedented demand to organize races and it is important that we find the right balance for the whole sport,” said Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali.

The global distribution of races continues to shift. There are nine in Europe, eight in Asia, four in North America and one in South America and Australia.

“The presence of 24 races on the 2023 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar is further proof of the sport’s growth and appeal on a global scale,” said Mohammed Ben Sulayem FIA president.
