GMB’s Adil Ray slammed for ‘inappropriate’ joke on Paul Gascoigne as he asks how he can remember Italian after a few ‘drinks’ amid footballer’s battle with alcoholism

GMB presenter Adil Ray was criticized by viewers on Wednesday’s show after his ‘inappropriate’ joke on Paul Gascoigne amid the footballer’s battle with alcoholism.

The host, 47, asked the sports star, 53, how he could remember the Italian after playing for the Lazio football team in the 90s and a few ‘tipples’ in his life.

Paul has been in rehab for alcohol-related issues since retiring from football in 2004.

The former footballer appeared on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday to talk about his time on the Italian version of I’m A Celebrity called L’Isola dei Famosi, where he spoke in Italian to Adil and co-host Susanna Reid at the start.

Speaking after her impressive language skills, Adil made an ‘inappropriate’ joke, saying, ‘Thanks for translating Susanna’s piece because I wasn’t sure what it was. Gazza, it’s amazing, though.

‘How many years you spent – three seasons, three years and that’s where you chose [speaking Italian] up and held on.

“ It was quite a while ago too and you’ve had a few tipples since then so keeping that in you is really impressive! ”

Viewers were quick to criticize Adil for the ‘tipples’ remark, as they called it ‘inappropriate’ and ‘awkward’ due to Paul’s battle with alcoholism.

One person said: ‘It was inappropriate from Adil over there to Paul Gascoigne. ”

A different viewer said: ‘Adil has a little dig on Gazza’s drink there. Embarrassing that #GMB. ‘

Another fan added: “I really don’t think it’s okay for @adilray to tell someone who’s had serious battles with drinking issues which almost cost him his life” and you had a few drinks since then. “So vulgar. #GMB. ‘

While another account added, “Why is it okay for the presenter to say ‘you had a few drinks’ to someone who has been fighting alcoholism publicly for 30 years? Aren’t we supposed to stop this sort of thing?

Paul told The Sun: ‘If I want a drink, I’m going to have a drink. If I don’t want it, I’ll just leave it, which isn’t the right thing, but I’ve been like this for ages. I don’t trust the spirits, so I digress from them, but I’m on top of things for now. I enjoy life.

In January 2020, Paul appeared on This Morning where he told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid at the time: ‘I had a relapse at Christmas which gutted me [about], but I have just taken the right path.

That same month he told the Mirror: ‘I went to Australia and spent £ 20,000 including travel to get an operation that prevents me from drinking.
