Grosjean made his last F1 start at last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix when a first-lap crash tore his car in two and let it escape the fire that engulfed his cockpit.

Grosjean emerged with burns to his hands which subsequently ruled him out of the last two races of the season, ending his F1 career prematurely.

But he vowed to make a return to F1 machines when possible, with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff saying at the time that he would be happy to host a test for Grosjean, paving the way for an announcement to be made on Wednesday.

Grosjean will have a full day testing the 2019 title-winning Mercedes W10 at Paul Ricard on June 29, as well as doing a few demonstration laps in the car a few days earlier during the French Grand Prix.

Preparations for the test began in March when Grosjean visited the Mercedes factory in Brackley for seat assembly and to undertake simulator work, tailored to his IndyCar engagements, where he is currently participating in a road course program and road with Dale Coyne Racing.

“I’m so excited to get back into an F1 car!” Said Grosjean.

“It will be a special occasion for me and driving a world champion Mercedes will be a unique experience.

“I am very grateful to Mercedes F1 and Toto for this opportunity. The first time I heard about the possibility of driving a Mercedes was in my hospital bed in Bahrain when Toto was speaking to the media and extending the invitation. Reading this news gave me a lot of morale!

“F1 didn’t have the chance to race in France in 2020 due to COVID, so driving a Mercedes to the French Grand Prix in 2021 and then completing a test at the Circuit Paul Ricard, my home track, will be so special. I can’t wait for the day to come. “

“We are very happy to support Romain with this special opportunity,” added Wolff. “The idea came when it looked like Romain would end his active Formula 1 career, and we didn’t want his accident to be his last moment in F1.

“I have known Romain from his Formula 3 days when he won the championship. He had a long and successful career in F1 and we wanted to make sure his last memories were behind the wheel of a championship winning car. I am delighted to see Romain’s return to the W10.

“Romain’s accident reminds us of the dangers these guys face every time they step into the cockpit, but it’s also a testament to the incredible steps this sport has taken to improve safety over the years.
