Review of the “Hiccups & Hookups” series

Vasudha Rao (Lara Dutta), a 39-year-old single mother lives with her teenage daughter Kay aka Kavanya Khatter (Shinnova) in the house of her phobic younger brother Akhil Rao (Prateik Babbar). The series explores Vasudha, Kay, and Akhil’s sexual escapades as the three deal with their romantic relationships with different people.

After being cheated on and recently divorced, Vasudha aims to get back into the dating game through “Kechup”, the dating app founded by her brother. Encouraged by her brother and her friend Fatty aka Fatima (tried on by Priyanka Chopra and Parineeti Chopra’s cousin Meera Chopra), Vasudha’s search for casual sex leads to some crazy adventures. Meanwhile, his rebellious daughter Kay is confused in her love life and Akhil struggles to start a stable relationship.

What stands out throughout the series is the brotherly relationship shared between Prateik Babbar and the characters of Lara Dutta. Their unfiltered chats about dating and casual sex are the highlight of this dramatic comedy. Set in Bengaluru, the series tries to promote healthy discussions about sex and relationships, the secret topics in Indian households.

The series is directed by Kunal Kohli who has previously directed hit romantic dramas such as “Hum Tum” and “Fanaa”. Lara Dutta and Prateik Babbar are brilliant as a sister-in-law duo and match well. Shinnova as Kay impresses in her debut. Mukesh Chhabra, a popular casting director who also starred for the series, adds humor to the series as Lara’s boss. Indira Bisht’s writing is efficient and layered. Sneha Khanwalkar, who has composed for films like “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye ‘is fantastic as the musical director of the series.
