WhatsApp has already provided an option to let you turn off notifications for individual chats and group messages forever on its platform since October of last year. However, this option is not useful when you are mentioned by someone in a group chat for which you have already turned off notifications. You will continue to receive notifications if a user in the group replies to any of your previously sent messages or mentions you in the discussion thread. It’s not technically a loophole, but it can get annoying if multiple members of a muted group mention you or respond to your previous post.

How to turn off mention notifications on WhatsApp

You can turn off notifications for messages that mention you or are in response to your existing message in a group for which you have already turned off notifications on Android and iOS. It also works on WhatsApp Web or its desktop client. What you need to do is turn off notifications from individual users who mention you or send a reply to your previous post in the disabled group.

To turn off notifications for an individual user, all you need to do is go to their profile on WhatsApp and then tap on the user’s name. After that, look for the deactivate the notifications option on Android or Mute on iOS. You can choose from three options – 8 hours, a week, or always options to turn off notifications.

WABetaInfo reports that the workaround would work even when WhatsApp activates the reported multi-device support. It could basically sync rules for notifications on devices.
