Team India failed to qualify for the 2022 Asian Cup final, due to a subpar performance in the Super 12 stage. Despite the failure, the Rohit Sharma led side and the cricket fans got a moment to cherish for a lifetime and that was the much anticipated 71st century star batter Virat Kohli. This milestone was reached during the Super 12 clash against Afghanistan, where he crushed an unbeaten 122 on just 61 balls. Before that, he had last touched a century in November 2019. After his knock, Virat had taken a moment to appreciate his wife, actress Anushka Sharma, and his daughter for being his mainstays through difficult times.
“I’ve learned a lot in the past two and a half years. I’ll be 34 in November. So those parties are a thing of the past. Actually, I was a bit shocked. This was a format where I least expected a ton. I worked hard and this is a very special moment for me and also for the team,” said Virat Kohli after scoring tons.
“It was an accumulation of a lot of things. The team has been open and helpful. It gave me space to work on my game. I know there was a lot going on on my outside. They kept my perspective right. And I kissed too my ring during the celebration You see me standing here because of all the things put into perspective by one person who has stood by me through all these difficult times that is Anushka This hundred is dedicated to her and also to our little daughter Vamika,” he added.
The words to Anushka from Kohli moved former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, as he appreciated the batter and said such things go unspoken in men’s sport.
“It’s great to see him back in the running. Great to see him back with a smile on his face. That’s what you know? He was so happy and I think he’s relieved at the end of that game. spoke fondly of his wife’s influence on the last few years of his life, which is also very nice to hear. A lot of those things remain unspoken, especially in men’s sports,” Ponting told ICC Review.
“Just the impact that your family and loved ones have on you during your career. So it’s nice to hear that, but also great to see Virat back in the running,” he added.
Speaking of confronting Afghanistan, Kohli’s knock helped India hit a 213-run goal. In return, Afghanistan could only go 111/8 as Team India won by 101 runs.
Kohli is currently with the Indian squad, which will face Australia in a three-game T20I series from September 20.
