India’s U-17 women’s team suffered a 0-7 loss to Italy at Grandisco D’lsonzo in the women’s football tournament on Wednesday. India started the match as Thomas Dennerby would have liked, trying to press the opposition high up the pitch and trying to point out their mistakes.

The tackles were flying from both sides and Italy got a free kick in the 4th minute. Béatrice curled the free-kick in but narrowly missed the target.

Italy almost took the lead in the 10th minute as Dragoni went one-on-one against Indian goalkeeper Monalisa, but the latter stretched and produced a magnificent save to prevent the Italian. However, India’s resistance was to be broken as soon as a minute later Maria Rossi put the ball in the back of the net.

In the 22nd minute, Monalisa was again called into action by Dragoni, but the former again parried the ball for a corner. India came closest to scoring on the half-hour mark when Anita attempted a long-range effort to take the Italian defense by surprise, but her shot missed the mark by a hair’s breadth.

The floodgates would then open as Anna Longobardi and Giulla Dragoni scored in the 31st and 33rd minutes, respectively, to give the Italians some much needed cushion. In the 36th minute, Kajol attempted the spectacular but she too missed the target by a hair’s breadth. The Young Tigresses led the Italians by a 0-3 margin at halftime.

Italy picked up where they left off in the first half when Manuela Sciabica scored in the 48th minute. A few quick goals also followed and with less than 15 minutes left in the second half, Italy had extended their lead to six goals. Thomas Dennerby made some changes in the 60th minute as Neha, Rejiya, Babina and Pinku replaced Nitu, Lynda, Kajol and Shelja respectively.
