The Chennai Super Kings have signed Australian point guard Jason Behrendorff to replace Josh Hazlewood for the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) from today. Behrendorff replaces Hazlewood, who withdrew from this year’s tournament earlier this month to spend time with his family. This will be Behrendorff’s second stint in IPL cricket, having represented the Mumbai Indians in 2019 where he played five matches and picked as many wickets. The fast left arm Behrendorff has already featured in 11 ODIs and seven T20Is for Australia.

Earlier, Hazlewood was set to leave for India with the IPL-linked Australian players, but decided not to do so to spend time with his family. Speaking to cricket.com.au, he was quoted as saying: “It’s been 10 long months in bubbles and 40s at different times so I decided to take a break from cricket and spend some time in home and Australia the next two months. We also have a great winter ahead. The West Indies are going to be a long tour, with a Bangladesh T20 tour potentially launching at the end. “
“Then potentially the T20 World Cup leading up to the Ashes, so it’s a big 12 months, as it always is with Australia, and I want to give myself the best chance of being mentally and physically ready for that. . That’s the decision I made, ”added Hazlewood that this year Ashes, West Indies and a possible Bangladesh tour with the T20 WC in India were crucial factors that prompted him to make that decision.
The Chennai Super Kings will start their campaign with a game against the Delhi Capitals at Wankhede Stadium on Saturday April 10th.
