Ralph Lauren brought his runway show to Southern California for the very first time in his long illustrious career and with it came a caravan of celebrities. The venue was the Huntington Library and Museum in Pasadena, and because Hollywood was adjacent, a constellation was invited to the event.
Formerly a private residence, the Beaux Arts mansion provided the perfect backdrop for Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2023 collection. The mansion’s grand proportions matched the image of the American label’s ultra-wealthy, mansion-born idealized clientele.
The front row shared Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck dressed in tailored, head-to-toe black with Lopez in a pinstripe jacket with a low V-neckline framing her plunging neckline. They were flanked by the musings of Ralph Lauren Diane Keaton in a tuxedo that would make Annie Hall proud, and Jessica Chastain in a festive red tartan blazer.
The collection, totaling over 100 looks, paraded by a diverse cast of models, touched every aspect of the Ralph Lauren aesthetic. There were nods to western dressing with denim workwear, cowboy hats, prairie dresses, and Navajo-printed cardigans and skirts. Then came the Gatsby-style looks with models dripping in luxurious cashmere and silk neutrals, from draped tailored loungewear to evening gowns to floor length to captains of the industry suits. These were followed by the preppies and the Ivy leaguers with the explosion of pastels and an abundance of madras and rugby stripes.
Taking it all in were Lily Collins (in a bustier top with an exaggerated bustle and train in the signature hunter green and navy Ralph Lauren plaid with black pants), John Legend (in a robe-style polka-dot coat) and Mindy Kaling in a lipstick red trouser suit with belt. Several iterations of Ralph Lauren clothing were worn by James Marden (pinstripe three-piece suit), Chris Pine (charcoal check three-button suit), Kim Woo-bin (chocolate brown double-breasted suit), and Patrick Schwarzenegger (shawl-lapel plaid suit). with a turtleneck).
Also in attendance were Rachel Zoe in a sparkly pleated skirt, Sylvester Stallone in a caramel suede coat and variations of cream separates, Laura Dern in a black beaded robe and Polo G in a rich red velvet tuxedo jacket.
It’s safe to say that both the runway show and the star power of the front row audience were cinematic quality.
