Jeremy Paxman looked frail as he used a walking stick in Manchester recently – just weeks after breaking his rib in a horrific fall on a dog walk.

The former Newsnight host, 70, relied on the walking aid as he was escorted to the TV studios by a colleague – after revealing he suffered a nasty fall when his dog Derek was surprised by a squirrel and pulled on his leash.

He clung to a detective novel, The Searcher, by Tana French as he made his way to Challenge University.

The presenter – famous for his aggressive interview style – wore a navy shirt, beige jacket, blue shorts and sandals as he walked to work.

Taking precautions against COVID-19, he wore a patterned face mask.

Jeremy revealed he was injured and “ passed out ” in his column for Saga Magazine recently.

The star said he had ‘no recollection’ of the fall because he ‘had passed out beforehand or did when my nose hit the ground’.

He said: “There was certainly a lot of blood after” and added his Dalmatian Spaniel cross Derek “must have seen a squirrel and jumped on his leash”.

He broke his ribs in the fall while walking with his dog and said he told Derek ‘it was all his fault’.

Jeremy said he had been to A&E three times before after he had “ cut ” the top of his thumb with an ax, when he had a contact lens stuck in his eye and when he took a friend who had impaled his thumb with a corkscrew.

Jeremy has previously shared how his beloved dog Derek helped him fight depression by walking three times a day.

Last month, Jeremy defended his habit of shooting squirrels with an air rifle while perched on the toilet, calling rodents a “ threat ” that frightened songbirds.

He ignored suggestions that he was’ cruel ‘, responding:’ They annoy me. ”

Speaking to comedian Richard Herring, he explained, “ You turn around – not while I’m doing ac ** p of course – just sitting on the toilet if it’s by the window.

You sit on the toilet with the lid down. With an air rifle you can jump, blow up a squirrel or two.

The fact that Paxman opens fire on squirrels in his toilet was first revealed in the introduction to his 2016 memoir, A Life in Questions.

Justifying the practice, he told Herring: ‘They always go up in the bird feeder.

“I love songbirds and can’t stand the fact that squirrels always hunt them.

“They kill all kinds of things. For example, they kill trees – entire trees are killed by squirrels. Its a threat.

Gray squirrels are allowed to be slaughtered in Britain by means such as shooting, provided it is done in a humane manner.

Marked by some as ‘tree rats’, they originated in America in the late 19th century to become the dominant squirrel in the UK, meaning the reds are now a protected species.

Jeremy was first seen with a cane in 2016 while out for a walk with his then 37-year-old partner Jillian Taylor.

In 2016, he was rushed to intensive care with a life-threatening blood clot in his lungs after routine knee surgery.

Veteran broadcaster Newsnight got scared after undergoing knee surgery, which had become ‘worn out’ from jogging. He was then broken using crutches.

Paxman ran the UKTN’s current affairs program, Newsnight, from 1989 to 2014, during which time he gained a reputation as a fierce interviewer.

In November 2020, he sold his Notting Hill apartment for £ 1million – where he lived with his Canadian partner Jillian – making a profit of £ 500,000.

He was previously in a 34-year relationship with Elizabeth Clough, who is the mother of his three children, but left her for Jillian in 2017.

Divorced Jillian had worked alongside the author and presenter on two of his bestsellers, including Britain’s Great War – and won the author’s praise in the process.
