Jimmy Garoppolo back in for 49ers after Trey Lance drives away

The San Francisco 49ers were forced to return to Jimmy Garoppolo after starting quarterback Trey Lance was discharged with an ankle injury in the first quarter of their Week 2 game with the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers already announced Lance does not return to the game.

Lance appeared to have injured his ankle during a designed run play at 2nd-and-8 on the Seahawks’ 21-yard line. He was immediately aircast and taken off the field.

It’s a huge blow to the 49ers, who were counting on Lance to ramp up their attack after Garoppolo led San Francisco to the 2021 NFC title game. The 49ers tapped Lance as their starter over Garoppolo this off-season, but were unable to trade their veteran all summer. The 49ers have restructured Garoppolo’s contract to keep him on the team as Lance’s backup and insurance policy in case of, well, a situation like this.
