An officer was killed and a second injured on Friday after a vehicle slammed into security and crashed into a barrier on the U.S. Capitol, forcing him to lock up less than three months after a mob attack on Congress.
Capitol Hill police shot dead the driver after he jumped out of the car and pounced on them with a knife, acting chief Yogananda Pittman told reporters.
No information was available on the attacker’s identity or motivation, but Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said a terrorist link was not suspected at this point.
“It doesn’t appear to be terrorism related, but we will obviously continue to investigate,” Contee said.
National Guard troops were mobilized and staff at the huge Capitol complex were ordered to stay away from windows and take cover after alerts about the incident.
TV footage showed a blue sedan crashed into a security fence on one of the streets leading to Congress, as what appeared to be the injured officers loaded onto carts and ambulances.
A helicopter landed on the Capitol grounds and police were loaded on board to be taken to hospital.
The attack took place amid heightened security in Washington following the January 6 insurgency by supporters of then President Donald Trump.
