Keira Knightley is moved to tears when she hears the WWII love story of her grandfather and voluntary grandmother while filming Channel 4’s My Grandparents’ War

Keira Knightley was moved to tears when she heard the wartime love story of her grandfather and voluntary grandmother while filming Channel 4’s My Grandparents’ War.

The 37-year-old actress was also saddened to learn that her great-uncle Andrew, an RAF bomber, was shot down while flying over Germany and was held as a prisoner of war for 18 months during World War II.

Fencing star Keira revealed in the documentary that her grandmother Jan never spoke of her difficult wartime experiences, including the time in 1943 when Jan and the rest of her family believed Jan’s younger brother Andrew Williams was dead after he was reported missing.

They feared that he had been shot down during a bombing raid over the city of Essen in western Germany.

While the pilot was in fact killed, the rest of the crew was ejected but held in a prison camp for 18 months.

Documenting the realization that he had survived, Andrew wrote, “I remember staggering against a wall, sliding to the floor and crying.”

Keira read his note and continued, “We were finally released.

“I was only six feet at the time and I thought we were all going to die.”

Hearing her grandmother run excitedly to the taxi to greet him when he finally got home, Keira added, “I bet she did. Oh god, you get it, don’t you?’

Keira’s grandfather Joseph ‘Mac’ MacDonald served in the Royal Navy for 12 years from 1934.
