‘King Kohli is still standing’: Fans react after BCCI fired Team India selection committee led by Chetan Sharma

The BCCI has fired Chetan Sharma as head of the selection committee.

The BCCI sacked the entire selection committee, chaired by Chetan Sharma, following Team India’s loss in the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup. The Men in Blue were eliminated from the competition after losing to England by ten wickets. Following Sharma’s resignation, the BCCI also called for applications for the position of India’s national selector.

Sharma took over the role from Sunil Joshi in 2020 for two years. During his term as the chairman of the selection committee of the world’s richest cricket board, India won numerous bilateral series at home and abroad. However, when it came to ICC trophies, India failed to win.

Meanwhile, fans were relieved when Sharma was fired. They reminded him of the removal of Virat Kohli as ODI captain a year ago.

After India’s humiliating loss in the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2021, Kohli willingly stepped down as captain of the T20I. He was stripped of the ODI captaincy a month later, highlighting a major underlying schism between Kohli and the BCCI administration.

Then BCCI President Sourav Ganguly revealed that they had asked him to reconsider his choice, which Chetan had also claimed, but Kohli later contradicted it claiming that he was not informed until an hour and a half before the selection meeting for the South Africa tour had been brought. Kohli stepped down as Test captain after January’s Test series.
