INdia’s coronavirus death toll topped 200,000 on Wednesday with more than 3,000 deaths reported in 24 hours for the first time, official data showed.
A total of 201,187 people have died today, including 3,293 in the last day, according to data from the Ministry of Health, although many experts suspect the true toll is higher.
India has now reported 18 million infections, an increase of 360,000 in 24 hours, which is a new world record. This month alone, the country added nearly six million new cases.
The explosion of cases, attributed in part to a new variant of the virus as well as mass political and religious events, has inundated hospitals with severe shortages of beds, medicine and oxygen.
