TThe Philippines is extending an already month-long lockdown by two weeks as the country’s worst peak in coronavirus infection begins to subside, but remains alarming.
President Rodrigo Duterte said in a televised address Thursday evening that the second most restrictive level of lockdown will now run through May 14 in metropolitan Manila and four neighboring provinces, an area of more than 25 million people. . Mayors, however, have reduced the nine-hour nighttime curfew in Metro Manila to six to help battered businesses.
Mr Duarte is warning mayors and village chiefs that they risk jail if they do not prevent rallies and other events that violate pandemic restrictions.
Confirmed coronavirus infections in the Philippines topped one million on Monday, with more than 17,000 deaths today, the second highest in Southeast Asia.
