FThe summer vacation will pose “no risk” to the UK’s infection rate, provided the destination’s case rate is no higher than ours, a leading epidemiologist and government adviser has said.

“[If] by the summer the infection levels in France and Italy are the same as here, so there is no risk associated with traveling abroad, ”Professor Neil Ferguson told the Radio Four’s Today program.

“The risk comes from a place like the UK, with very low infection levels, to a place with much higher infection levels – and therefore having the risk of bringing the infection back.”

Referring to the UK’s advanced inoculation program, Professor Ferguson said the country was “well placed to stick to the government’s roadmap”, which aims to resume international travel on May 17.

The government is due to release its list of “traffic lights” this week, with travel industry leaders expecting Spain, Greece and France to be given the green light for unrestricted travel from here June. The EU also plans to approve visitors vaccinated in time for summer getaways.

However, on Monday Prime Minister Boris Johnson played down hopes of an immediate mass leak, saying putting a significant number of countries on the “green list” from May 17 would risk an “influx of disease”.
