The race to sign Sergio Aguero this summer has heated up with Leeds United entering as a contender, according to a report.
Aguero is out of contract with Manchester City at the end of the season. The club have already confirmed that they will not renew their contract as the all-time top scorer. Therefore, his decade of service will come to an end, leaving him in search of a new club.
The 32-year-old is keen to prove that he can still succeed in the Premier League even though he has failed to score in open play in this season’s competition. He might also consider moving to another big European league.
Many suitors are arguing to keep him in England. A recent report claimed that he could consider a move to Tottenham or Chelsea.
Aguero doesn’t see Champions League football as an absolute necessity when choosing his next club. Therefore, there might be a chance for some of the outside suitors to take it.
But a move to Leeds would certainly be a surprise – and yet it is a possibility, according to 90 mins.
The website claims Leeds have joined the race to sign Aguero as a free agent. They have been disappointed with club Rodrigo’s record signing since his summer move and may move him – despite the striker denying claims he could leave.
Patrick Bamford has done much better up front and is expected to stay at Elland Road. In fact, Leeds are trying to tie him to a new contract.
But they need some additional competition from the start, and signing Aguero would be a huge declaration of intent.
Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa is naturally a fan of his compatriot and would welcome him to West Yorkshire. Such a move would also mean that Aguero would not have to move, whereas joining one of his London suitors or a foreign team would.
The report also mentions Arsenal and West Ham as contenders, while Aguero is aware of the interest in La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1. He also has admirers outside of Europe, in MLS and in the Middle-East.
Therefore, Leeds will have to beat the big competition for Aguero’s signing if they really want to. But if they could strike a deal, it would be a high-profile decision.

Barcelona fight for Aguero
One of Leeds’ biggest rivals for Aguero could be Barcelona, who want him to help form a new attack at Camp Nou.
Seemingly overpriced in the race for Erling Haaland, Barca are turning to cheaper alternatives. Available on a free transfer, Aguero would be within the budget as long as they can pay his paycheck.
The Argentina international has had La Liga experience since his time with Atletico Madrid. He spent five years there, improving his reputation before winning his move to City.
Barca could now try to bring him back into Spain’s top flight and pair him with compatriot Lionel Messi, if they manage to convince the latter to extend his own contract.
