Amid calls for his impeachment by some Democrats, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has found an unlikely defender – Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
Sotomayor praised his colleague, saying he is a very likeable person who “cares deeply” about the integrity of the court.
“Judge Thomas is the only judge in the building who literally knows the name of every employee, every single one of them,” she told attendees of the American Constitution Society’s 2022 national convention on Thursday.
“And not only does he know their names, but he remembers the names and stories of their families.”
She said that despite their differences of opinion on how to help people, they maintain a friendship because she knows that Thomas is a “man who cares deeply about the court as an institution…people who work here”.

However, Sotomayor has not always been kind to conservatives on the Supreme Court.
In the pleadings concerning Roe vs. Wadeshe suggested that the Court was not considering the law itself, but rather seeking to pursue its annulment due to the makeup of the judges.
“Will this institution survive the stench it creates in the public perception that the Constitution and its reading are just political acts? she asked.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor, a staunch proponent of abortion rights, questioned the Mississippi Solicitor General, asking if the Supreme Court institution would “survive the stench” of unseating Roe in what appears to be a political act. https://t.co/sbHcIObnjQ

Sonia Sotomayor’s comment comes as Democrats are actively calling for Thomas’ impeachment over the alleged conduct of his wife, Virginia Thomas.
Reports have surfaced that Thomas’ wife exchanged text messages with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and other officials about alleged voter fraud.

Sotomayor made a widely criticized misrepresentation about the severity of COVID infection in children during closing arguments about the Biden administration’s efforts to mandate vaccines.
“We have over 100,000 children, who we’ve never had before, in serious condition, and many on ventilators” because of the coronavirus, she said.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky would later say the Supreme Court judge was wrong, pointing out at the time that there were 3,500 children in the hospital.
Meanwhile, Thomas joked with the media about when he would leave the Supreme Court.
