Today’s Matariki celebrations signal the maturing of Aotearoa, the Maori leader said. We have the latest information on how Matariki is marked around the motu.
A ceremony attended by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and other dignitaries took place in Wellington for the first national public holiday in Aotearoa for Matariki.
On a quiet morning from Wellington to Te Papa, the hautapu ceremony was led by Sir Pou Temara and a fan of tohunga.
“Today is a moment in time. It’s a moment that future generations will look up to and say it’s when we’ve come of age,” Sir Pou said.

Matariki is the start of the Matariki Maori New Year – a time of celebration, remembrance, growth and renewal and events to recognize this have been held across the country.
RNZ marks Matariki with special programming throughout the day with highlights including a live broadcast of Te Papa celebrations hosted by Julian Wilcox and Māni Dunlop and an interview with renowned Maori astronomer Professor Rangi Mātāmua.
