Meta extends features of end-to-end encryption on Messenger and how it works

Meta-owned Facebook has announced that Messenger is getting end-to-end encryption for user security and privacy across messages and calls. End-to-end encrypted conversations protect the content of your texts and calls from the moment it leaves your device until it reaches the recipient’s device.

This means that no one else, not even Meta, can see or hear what is being sent or said. Mark Zuckerberg announced on January 23, 2023 that introducing some of the features you love in Messenger will now be available in end-to-end encrypted chats, such as chat themes, group profile pictures, active status, and more.

How your chat is protected with end-to-end encryption:
An end-to-end encrypted discussion is protected by a unique key shared by all participating devices. Your device locks the message while it is being sent when you send it in a conversation that is end-to-end encrypted. Only a device with one of the conversation keys can unlock this message.

End-to-end encrypted discussions and messages on Facebook Chat and Messenger can be reported if you believe they violate our community standards.

Up to 30 of the most recent texts of a discussion that you choose to report and send to us from your smartphone will be available for you to read and rate. Plus, you have six hours after a communication disappears from an end-to-end encrypted conversation to report it.

  • You can’t report video or audio calls in Messenger or Facebook chat.
  • Someone in end-to-end encrypted communication can see or hear the content of the message if they choose to share it with someone else.
  • Please note that chat customizations are not end-to-end encrypted. Nicknames, chat themes, quick responses, and other chat customizations are available.
  • No one outside the call can see or hear your voice or video when you use Play Together or Watch Together. However, in order for the game to function, specific actions are sent to remote game servers.

List of features added in end-to-end encryption mode:

  1. Group Profile Photos: If you’re part of a Messenger group, you can choose group profile photos for different chats to have them display photos.
  2. Custom Chat Emojis: Messenger users can share custom emojis with other users, including comments in the chats.
  3. Chat Themes: Chat themes include static and gradient themes to personalize end-to-end chats.
  4. Active status: Other users can see when you are active and the setting can be changed if you do not want your users to know the active status of your phone.
  5. Bubbles on Android: While using other apps, you can read and reply to messages using bubbles (a circle with your friend’s picture inside). When activated, a balloon appears when a new message arrives.
