Newcastle United considering transfer fee for Chelsea trio

Newcastle United are looking at signing Chelsea midfielders Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek and winger Hakim Ziyech this month.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter would be reluctant to lose Gallagher and Loftus-Cheek given the club’s escalating injury problems, but Telegraph sports understands that Ziyech should be allowed to leave. Chelsea must cut two non-native players from their Champions League squad ahead of their Round of 16 tie against Borussia Dortmund next month, following the arrival of Mykhailo Mudryk, Joao Felix and Benoît Badiashile in January, to comply with the squad’s squad rules. Newcastle have looked at signing Gallagher, a long-term target of head of recruitment Steve Nickson, in each of the past two summer windows. They have also expressed an interest in Manchester United’s Scott McTominay, after learning the player is concerned about a lack of playing time under Erik ten Hag. The Scotland international is widely loved by the Newcastle management team and the North East club will bid if they are encouraged to do so by Old Trafford. Telegraph sports understands that McTominay is open to a move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe’s main priority during this period is another central midfielder, but he is also eyeing wingers and right-backs. Multiple sources have said the only players Newcastle will be considering this month are players from their summer target list. However, Howe has been warned that anything he spends this month will be taken out of the summer budget. Newcastle has spent around £205 million in two windows since being taken over by a Saudi Arabian-led consortium in October 2021.

Another player that has been discussed is midfielder Ruben Neves but it is clear Wolves have no intention of selling this month and the deal is believed to be out of Newcastle’s budget, even if they wait until the summer to make a deal transfer to the Portuguese international.

Meanwhile, Howe is awaiting the severity of Bruno Guimaraes’ ankle injury after the midfielder hobbled during the 1-0 win over Fulham. The Brazil international has been sent for a scan and it is hoped it is a sprain rather than ligament or joint damage.
