Helsinki police suspect a 40-year-old taxi driver of multiple rapes in the city.
Police said the suspect was driving a car with a taxi sign on the roof and picking up unaccompanied women from taxi ranks. Police believe he provided his victims with alcohol and possibly other intoxicants while pretending to get them to their destination, according to a statement on Wednesday.
Rather, the individual is believed to have taken the passengers to an apartment outside of Helsinki, where police believe he raped a number of victims.
Police said they suspected there was more than one victim, but said they were unwilling to comment further on the exact number of victims at this point in the investigation.
The alleged breaches occurred during the month of April, and other potential victims may not have come forward yet.
“On the basis of the facts uncovered during the preliminary investigation, the police have reason to believe that the suspect also committed similar sexual offenses against persons not yet identified”, according to the detective inspector. Jutta Antikainen of the Helsinki Police Department.
Police asked individuals who suspected they had been the victims of a similar crime to notify the authorities at: (during office hours) 0295 471 612 or by e-mail [email protected]
