President Biden, Governor Newsom responds to mass shooting in Monterey Park


MONTEREY PARK, California (KABC) — President Joe Biden and local and state officials respond to the Monterey Park mass shooting, expressing their condolences to the victims and offering assistance as needed.

Biden was briefed on the shooting by his homeland security adviser, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a tweet.

“The President has been notified by the Homeland Security Advisor of the Monterey Park mass shooting. He has instructed her to ensure that the FBI fully supports local authorities and to update him regularly today as more details become known. are.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom also issued a statement via Twitter:

“Monterey Park should have had a joyful Lunar New Year celebration,” Newsom said. “Instead, they were victims of a horrific and callous act of gun violence. Our hearts mourn as we learn more about last night’s devastating acts. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her condolences to the residents of her neighboring community.

“The reports coming out of Monterey Park are absolutely devastating,” Bass tweeted. “Families deserve to celebrate the holidays in peace – mass shootings and gun violence plague our communities.

As investigations reveal where these killings were motivated by Asian hatred, we continue to unite against all attempts to divide us. My heart goes out to Monterey Park and the families and friends of the lost.”

Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles said he is praying for the victims of the shooting.

“We pray for the dead and injured in this shooting, we ask God to stay close to their families and loved ones. We pray for the wounded to be healed, and we ask God to give strength and guidance to the doctors and nurses who are take care of them,” Gomez said.

We ask God to grant wisdom and prudence to law enforcement and government officials who work to understand the violence and keep our communities safe.
