PRINCE GEORGE — A Petersburg man was hit by a van and killed early Wednesday morning as he walked along State Route 36, Prince George police said.

The unidentified 33-year-old man was heading east on Route 36 toward Hopewell when he was hit by a white Ford van that also drove into Hopewell, police officer Alexis Grochmal said in an email. He died on the spot.

The driver of the van, a 58-year-old man from Sutherland, was not injured, Grochmal added.

The incident happened around 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday. Grochmal said the driver stopped the van and cooperated with the investigation, which is still ongoing. No charges have been filed.

The stretch of road where the pedestrian was struck is between Fort Lee’s Sisisky Boulevard and the Hopewell city line. It is not a well lit area at night.
