SANTA CLARITA (UKTN) – A wanted suspect in the theft of a postman was taken into custody Tuesday night in Canyon Country, but a cellphone video of the arrest by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s assistants has sparked an investigation into the use of force.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the situation unfolded when a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier was robbed around 5:30 p.m. The USPS carrier said the suspect had faked a handgun.
About an hour later, at around 6:30 p.m., MPs came across a man walking with a package in the 17700 block of Danielson Street.
When the man told MPs the package did not belong to him, they attempted to stop him in connection with the previous theft.
“The man became uncooperative and force was used,” LASD said in a statement Wednesday morning.
A 2-minute and 20-second cell phone video taken from inside a nearby car – which was later posted on social media – shows the two MPs struggling on the ground by the side of the road with the suspect male. At one point, one of the deputies puts the man in a choke.
Eventually, one of the deputies is lying flat on top of the suspect in the grass as they appear to be trying to handcuff him.
The Sheriff’s Department reported that the suspect, who has not been named, sustained moderate injuries but did not require hospitalization. It is not known if a weapon was recovered.
He was identified by the postal carrier as the robbery suspect and was subsequently charged with robbery and assault against a peace officer, LASD reported.
