Paul Scholes believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ‘clearly wrong’ in claiming that David de Gea and Dean Henderson are Manchester United’s number one goalkeeper.

Henderson was selected on From Gea for a Premier League match for the first time outright when United finally sawn off Brighton last weekend. It came after England received a series of matches while De Gea was on paternity leave.

However, the Spaniard was back in the starting lineup for the Europa League clash with Granada. And this, even if Henderson was previously the No. 1 in European clashes.

Scholes, speaking on BT Sport, thinks Henderson has a good chance of impressing Solskjaer. Indeed, he objected to the Red Devils boss’s assessment that the two players are equal.

He said: “I think it’s always embarrassing to try to keep two goalies happy. I was in a team that tried to replace Peter Schmeichel for years and it wasn’t until we had Edwin van der Sar, five or six years later, that it seemed to settle back. Who is number one here?

“Ole said both, he’s clearly wrong. I think he was eager to give Dean Henderson a chance and with David de Gea’s girlfriend or wife having a baby, it gave him the opportunity to play Dean Henderson, which he did.

“I think number one is the one who plays in Premier League games. Dean Henderson he totally convinced Ole? I think he has a great chance to do it, I don’t think he has had any in the last five or six games.

“You have to say that David is a quality goalkeeper, the service he gave to United. Which he did for four or five years when United really struggled.

“They could have been a mid-table team without him. He’s lost a bit of form and a bit of confidence, but I wouldn’t rule him out.

Not a perfect night for Solskjaer

Meanwhile, Solskjaer admitted that “it was not a perfect night” even though Manchester United achieved a “very good result” against Granada in the Europa League quarter-finals.

A goal from Marcus Rashford and a penalty from Bruno Fernandes were enough for United on the night. They gained a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, those two away goals should come in handy before the second leg next week.

But it could have been better for United, who only had one shot on target other than his goals. Additionally, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay have all taken bookings that exclude them from the return leg.

Therefore, Solskjaer admitted there could have been better aspects – but praised the confidence of his two scorers.

He said BT Sport: “It wasn’t a perfect night. We had three yellow cards and three suspensions.

“2-0 is a very good result. We know how difficult it is to come to Spain. We have to play well to get a result.

“They [Rashford and Fernandes] were exceptional, so important to us. It was a very good run from Rashford, takes the ball wonderfully.

“Bruno is so confident on penalties even though the keeper almost saved him.”
