Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur on Wednesday rejected suggestions he berated skipper Dasun Shanaka on camera after losing a one-day streak to India. India topped Sri Lanka’s 275-9 with five balls left in Colombo on Tuesday to register a victory that gave them a 2-0 lead in the three-game series. The South African coach of Sri Lanka was seen sharing lively words with Shanaka and gesturing to the captain on the pitch after the game lost by three wickets.

He appeared to indicate that Shanaka should accompany him off the pitch, but the captain did not move as Arthur walked away, in a video shared widely on social media.

“It was actually a really good debate, no need to mess around with it,” Arthur said on Twitter in response to match commentator Russell Arnold’s comment that the trade should have taken place in the locker room.

Sri Lanka entered the series with injuries and without batting coach Grant Flower who tested positive for Covid-19 upon his return with the squad from a tour of England where they lost both ODI and Twenty20 series.

Top scorer Charith Asalanka, who turned 65, said Sri Lanka believed they had won the game, but India’s lower order fought back.

From 193-7, Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar put on an undefeated stand of 84 for the eighth wicket to secure the victory for India.

“We thought we got a good total (275), but we lost the plot along the way,” Asalanka said.

The young Sri Lankan side were emotional after losing the series, he said. The final ODI takes place on Friday and the T20 three-game series begins on Sunday.
